Photo on right is looking south west (as in central aerial photo). Showing setting up rig at commencement of drilling. Provisions made to protect farm lands include plastic (orange) sheeting placed over ground, below and around rig to ensure no oil spills to the land.

DRILLING

The first diamond hole has now been drilled. Directors stopped this hole at 130 metres – in wood! (more below) and before reaching the rocks of prospective interest.

Below are two photos to illustrate the nature of material encountered in the lower part of Hole TD07-1 (drilled at -65°, to west)

This hole was sited to try to reach the recognised anomaly (as published). As with all first holes in any location, the questions are always about just what may be encountered below the basalt. That is – what we find below the basalt often dictates how we go about setting out subsequent probes to reach the anomaly.

In this case, the core shows four layers of basalt with internal clays and/or ash flows, down to a hole depth of about 72 metres, followed by granitic sands, then deeper, passing through that structure-less fine grey material known as ‘drift', below which (at 130 metres) the hole encountered part of an ancient tree. The “material” newly revealed in core has not been disclosed by any prior drilling. It appears similar in many respects to that described material passed through in shaft sinking under the basalts of Ballarat West in the 1860s (including the wood!).

These ground conditions being revealed suggest that the anomaly could best be probed by the drilling of vertical holes. This realisation led to the shut-down of the angled diamond drilling work at Tourello. The program is suspended for the moment.

Initial rehabilitation concluded prior to 18 May 2007
